FOUJITA (Léonard) - GIRAUDOUX (Jean). Combat avec l'image. Paris : Émile-Paul frères, [1941]. - In-8, 238 x 184: (4 ff.), 24 pp. (4 ff. first and last 2 blank), printed cover. This text is a brief meditation written by Giraudoux in his hotel room, after the declaration of war and the French surrender. In it, the author evokes a sketch by FOUJITA, received as a gift, which transformed his intimate space: "When I turn on the light, I illuminate something. When I close the room, I put that something in the dark. This "something" is the drawing - a portrait of a sleeping woman - which imposes itself as an omnipresent presence. It accompanies him when he eats, when he writes, and embodies the ordinary daily existence he has abandoned since the start of the war. This color drawing is reproduced in extenso at the opening and closing of the text, while fragments and details are scattered throughout the book. Limited edition of 1100 copies, this one among the 1000 on paper from Papeteries Boucher de Do (no. 314). Excellently preserved copy.
