BONNARD (Pierre) - LONGUS. Les Pastorales de Longus ou Daphnis et Chloé traduction de Messire J. Amyot... Revue, corrigée, complétée de nouveau, refaite en grande partie par Paul-Louis Courier. Paris : Ambroise Vollard, 1902. - In-4, 293 x 246 : X, 294 pp, (2 ff. last blank), illustrated cover. Fine illustrated edition, with 156 original lithographs by Pierre BONNARD (1867-1947). This is the second book published by Ambroise Vollard, after Paul Verlaine's revolutionary Parallèlement published in 1900 with illustrations by the same artist. " Parallèlement and Daphnis et Chloé will keep the Vollard name alive. The choice of format and paper, the quality of the print run and printing, and the harmony achieved between the typographic character and the image all contributed to the pleasure of the eye and the mind. These works, printed in two hundred and fifty copies, did not please bibliophiles, who took more than twenty years to understand them" (Roger-Marx, Les illustrations de Bonnard, Plaisir de bibliophilie, II, 1926, pp. 1-10). 250 copies were printed. This is one of 200 on Hollande à la forme (no. 226), enriched, under the justification, with a signed autograph letter from Ambroise Vollard to the wife of politician Étienne Clémentel: Hommage de l'éditeur // à Madame Etienne Clementel // Vollard The work was normally published in sheets, but this one has been expertly bound later with the original cover. Provenance: Madame Étienne Clémentel, with publisher's consignment.
