The role and symbolism of the owl - like the cat - in Chris Marker's work have been the subject of much debate. A guardian and vigilant figure, a messenger or a motif of the strange, the owl is also at the heart of The Owl's Legacy, a documentary series that questions the legacy of ancient Greece in the contemporary world. Chris Marker's use of an authentic album of business cards and cabinet cards, into which he inserts photographic stagings of owl cuddly toys, undoubtedly refers to the object's affective - if not familial - function, as well as to his relationship with Dominique Raoul-Duval. Two owls evolve through the pages in a key narrative that is probably autobiographical, ending with the appearance of the cat Guillaume-en-Égypte, the sole protagonist of the short film Chat écoutant la musique (Cat Listening to Music), made in 1988.
