Jean-Victor MOREAU (1763-1813) Revolutionary general, Bonaparte's rival. L.A.S., Salzburg H.Q. 30 Messidor IX (July 19, 1801), to Lieutenant General Grenier; 1 1/4 pages in-4, headed Armée du Rhin... Le Général en Chef (Thorek coll. stamp). He protests against the excessive spending of general officers, against embezzlement and other misappropriations in the Army's accounts, in connection with a note given to him by the Electoral Government... "How do you expect contributions to be paid, and consequently pay to be discharged, if each general officer alone costs one hundred or one hundred and fifty thousand francs a year. Try, my dear general, to put a stop to such well-founded complaints, or I shall be obliged to make a settlement that is humiliating for me & for those who are the object of them"... Thus he is willing to forget "the story of the Linz inventories", but cannot do the same for Cen Bourgeois, "for it is scandalous to have been mistaken by half on all the articles, and halves that do not hide in the pockets"...
