Sextius-Alexandre-François MIOLLIS (1759-1828) general. L.A.S., Livorno H.Q. 10 germinal VII (March 30, 1799), to General Gaultier; 1 1/2 pages in-fol. headed Armée d'Italie... LL. Miollis, General de Brigade Commandant, fine engraved vignette, stamp of the Maret collection. About the reconquest of Elba. He left the island yesterday via Porto Ferrajo and visited all the coastal forts from Piombino, which he found well guarded. The day before, he wrote him "what I did to secure the island of Elba for us, and the events that prevented me from taking Longone. It was impossible for me to march there soon with artillery. [...] I've had the roads worked on, and I hope we'll be able to bombard in two days [...] with six mortars and a howitzer [...] I'm still sending ten gunners and three hundred men there with all due speed, and I'm also having the Piombino Company of chasseurs supplemented by one from here, which will put another four hundred men on the island of Elba. We'll have around a thousand, which is essential, as the fortress of Porto Ferrajo is very crowded". He believes that Longone will not be able to resist much longer, despite help from the sea, and the situation there is terrible: "they will all be massacred. I had them tell me that, in their misfortune, they would always have an asylum among us"... Everything is ready at Porto Ferrajo, "in the best of dispositions", for the definitive capture of the island...
