Very long letter recounting the misadventures of the associate of Bordeaux shipowners Sersy Pouillard & Cie, sent to Mexico to trade. After buying a "royal frigate in the port [of Vera Cruz], repairing it, maintaining its crew, stocking up, etc., he engaged me to obtain another permission to sell for seven to eight thousand piastres more; I obtained it, and by this means and some intrigue, he was able to dispose of his entire cargo. At his request, I also obtained permission to load timber, and I don't think an honest man has ever been so fortunate. This unfortunate man wanted to make the most of his fortune by buying cochineal, a trade forbidden to foreigners, and loading it stealthily; he was sold or discovered, and that's where all your misfortunes come from"... He then recounts the incredible adventures of Sieur Sersy and his cargo of cochineal.
