Théophile Malo Corret de LA TOUR D'AUVERGNE (1743-1800) warrior and scholar, "Premier Grenadier de la République". L.A.S., Perpignan November 21, 1789, to M. de La Salle de Cézeaux "commandant des chasseurs du Régiment d'Angoumois" at Mont Réal; 2pages and a quarter in-4, addressed with red wax seal of arms.
Interesting letter about the disorder in Perpignan.
He is about to leave Perpignan for his "hermitage in Collioure", where he has retired to keep an eye on "a large number of convalescents from the Regiment who have been sent there for a change of air". He himself requested this assignment to flee Perpignan, and escape "the spirit of division, hatred and disorder that has reigned here since your departure between all the orders of the city [...], everything is in the greatest combustion, knights, noble citizens, lawyers, the consulate, the people, the sovereign council, the intendance, &ca, &ca". Only the military seems stable. He is happy to have been able to escape this situation to avoid "seeing myself exposed by my former liaisons to show more inclination for one party than for another, even though my maxim today is to enter into all the interests of my friends, but never into their passions"... All is quiet in the regiment, but "illnesses are not diminishing either in the town or in the garrison, they even seem to be taking on a very bad character"...
Attached is a certified copy of an order appointing general officers, who are in short supply in the Basses-Pyrénées, including, on a provisional basis, La Tour d'Auvergne to the rank of Colonel of the 20th Infantry Regiment, Bayonne April 25, 1793.
