AFRICA. L.A.S. by surgeon A. BUISSON, Rade du Gabon August 7, 1858, to Inspecteur général du service de santé de la Marine; 11pages in-4.
Interesting report. Buisson deplores the death of surgeon Mesnard "sent from France to assist in the operation to recruit blacks". He praises the activity of M. Huart, who was able to gather a wealth of information on remote localities that had been frequented "only by captains and slave traders". He speaks of the "recruitment centers established by the Régis company". La Stella left with a load of blacks. "We currently have the Joseph in Gabon (Maison Vidal du Havre), which is also recruiting for the colonies. Either the local breeds are less beautiful than those of the Congo, or the pettiness of the means of exchange used by the representatives of this company does not allow them to choose, but the fact remains that the appearance of these recruits leaves much to be desired". He believes that "the Congo can supply as large a number of fine subjects as the colonies could wish"... He then goes on to talk at length about his medical work, examining recruits and crews, inspecting ships, caring for the sick and so on.
