Henry de MONTHERLANT. L.S. with 7 autograph lines, March 8, 1950, to M. Antonini; 2 pages in-4.
About the Italian publication of his Théâtre by Bompiani and the choice of his translators. He gives his agreement in principle "for the publication of a part of my theater", in which he would like to see Fils de Personne and Demain il fera jour among others. This "formula of five plays" has already been adopted in Spain, New York, London and Germany: "Thus there would be a single formula in the great nations of Europe". As for the translation, he asks that a test be carried out, entrusting the 3rd act of The Master of Santiago to several translators, and that he himself then choose, after consultation with qualified people, the translator of the entire volume, and if the latter "did a highly satisfactory job, I would be prepared to consider giving him exclusive rights to translate the plays, including the rights for performance". He adds, in his own handwriting: "Above all, I want my translators not to take liberties with my text, not to translate a rare or strange expression by a banal one, on the pretext that the public would be shocked by this translation [...]. In short, I want my translators not only to know both languages well, but also to be true writers"... He adds that the Théâtre Hébertot will perform Le Maître de Santiago in French in Rome, and in most major Italian cities...
Attached is a L.A.S. to the same author, 13.I.1951 (1p. in-8, thanking him for an article and mentioning Malatesta.
