Henry de MONTHERLANT (1896-1972). 2 L.A.S., Algiers February 14 and 23, 1933, to Louis Brun, literary director of Editions Grasset; 2 1/2 pages in-4, one stamped envelope.
About a new edition of La Relève du matin.
February 14th. He has left the Midi, where he met too many people, for Algiers "where at last I am at peace. [...] In five days at most, I'll send you the first half of La Relève, text revised. The second part will follow 8 days later", then he will write the preface: "It will be about twenty typewritten pages long, and I plan to italicize it, so that it will 'stand out' better from an already long text"... - February 23. He warns Brun "that the corrections made to La Relève are very numerous. This book was in a deplorable state; I'd rather not see it appear than to see it appear in its present form. I therefore believe that there is nothing to retain from the old composition. In the new preface - severe for the book - I intend to sketch out a critique of it and even blame those who have praised it unreservedly"...
Attached is a L.A.S. to the American publisher Blanche Knopf, January 19, 1938, about Marie Sheikevitch and the 4th book of Les Jeunes Filles (2p. in-4). Plus a L.A.S. and a card a.s. to Hélène Midoux, secretary of the Comédie-Française (1966); and a letter addressed to Montherlant by Émile Lecerf (Bruxelles 1943), about his book Montherlant ou la guerre permanente, annotated by Montherlant.
