[Robert de MONTESQUIOU]. 4 letters and manuscripts, June 1897 (small monogram stamp of the Count). About his duel with Henri de Régnier. [Following the fire at the Bazar de la Charité (May 4), in which Mme de Heredia and her daughter Hélène were injured, and Henri de Régnier's erroneous suggestion that Montesquiou had caned his way through, a sword duel took place on June 9 at the Pont de Neuilly; Montesquiou was slightly wounded]. The documents presented here were (with the exception of Barrès's letter) published as a note in Volume III of Montesquiou's Mémoires, Les Pas effacés. Maurice Barrès. L.A.S., [June 5], to Robert de Montesquiou (1p. in-12, adr.). He learns that "H. de R.'s witnesses are Houssaye and Béraud. We propose that they meet [...] I'm of the opinion that we should ask for two balls (that is, four) and I believe that we will express to you the regrets to which you are entitled"... Henry Houssaye. P.A.S., June 6 (1p. ¼ in-4). Minutes signed by the 4 witnesses (Houssaye and Jean Béraud; Barrès and Count de Dion). Following remarks by Henri de Régnier and those close to him, "M. de Montesquiou considered himself gravely offended", and demanded "reparation by arms". The witnesses met, "and after the written declarations of M. de Régnier and M. de Montesquiou, each giving a different version of the words exchanged", they concluded that arbitration was impossible. Jean Béraud. Autograph manuscript signed (co-signed by Barrès and Houssaye), "Pour copie de l'original de M. Robert de Montesquiou" (1p. ½ in-fol.), reporting Régnier's hurtful allusions to the Count's cane: "une bonne canne de bazar, de bazar de la charité. Pour taper sur les femmes", etc. Henri de Régnier. Signed autograph manuscript (1p. in-fol.), giving his (anodyne) version of the exchange of remarks with the Count about his cane; it is signed on the back by the 4 witnesses.
