François MAURIAC. Typescript with autograph additions and corrections, La Mort par l'image, [1951]; 4pages in-4.
Review of Mademoiselle Julie, Alf Sjöberg's film adaptation of August Strindberg's play, published in Revue internationale de Cinéma (n° 12, 1951).
He saw the film as a nightmare. "Strindberg does not spare us any of the circles of our hell: mating in its most bestial aspect, hereditary fatality, madness, crime, the contempt of the rich and powerful for the weak and poor, suicide at last"... Etc. The film seemed to him to be formidable in its vision of evil... And he adds, in his own handwriting, in conclusion: "Nothing would suffice for the poetry of this great film not to risk giving death: a maid praying, at night, in her garret, a mother watching her child sleep, a drunkard rescued, at night, by a ferocious adolescent like Rimbaud".
