Marcel JOUHANDEAU (1888-1979). Autograph manuscript [on André Gide]; 2 1/2 pages in-8 crossed out in red pencil on graph paper, with erasures and corrections. Interesting text on André Gide and religion. "Between Gide and me there is something that brings us together and then distances us from each other. Gide's relationship with God sometimes has an accent that resembles mine, but in the end, for him, man to man is enough. For me, on the contrary, I have kept the essentials of the Christian faith, on which I base my understanding of Man. From this external point of reference, Man seems to me not only indefinable, but uninteresting. From my earliest childhood, I have been sensitive to the dangers that freedom and immortality, if they belong to the human soul, present for man and for God himself. [...] Man, able to resist the Eternal forever, Gide must have loved this concept of a new Prometheus, this one Christian, and far better armed and more formidable than the other. If he had rejected the principle, he nonetheless admired its magnificence from afar." We enclose 3 L.A.S.: to Blaise Allan (1930); about his tribute to Maurras (1937); to Jean Blanzat (1961).
