Francis JAMMES (1868-1938). L.A.S., Orthez January 7, 1907, to Charles Dumas; 2 fol. pages, envelope. Beautiful letter to the young poet Charles Dumas, on his second collection of poems L'Ombre et les proies (Ollendorff, 1907): "You only have to catch a glimpse of these leaves to guess their flowers. How many young poets are, alas! far from this purity, so serious and so noble. The chaste, proud sensibility of this book makes me think of some little new bride, perfectly formed and whose cheek awaits kisses. May she grow up and keep her promises. [...] Delicacy, distinction, surety of taste, dignity in emotion, respect in love, such are the precious qualities of your poetry". He congratulates him on winning the Prix Sully Prudhomme, "Even though I keep myself rather far from honors, and for 16 years I have struggled without having received anything but scorn from the official gentry - except from Coppée. May my laurels beaten by the winds and twisted like the arms of a faun send their perfume to yours"... Attached are several press clippings on L'Ombre et les Proies.
