Erik Gustaf GEIJER (1783-1847) Swedish writer, historian, philosopher and composer. L.A.S., Bohors July 20, 1837, [to Xavier Marmier]; 4pages in-4 (one edge slightly creased and frayed). Beautiful letter from the Swedish historian, thanking Xavier Marmier for coming to visit him in Sweden and regretting having missed him. "You are very good to have come looking for me even in the depths of my native province, during your stay in Sweden, and I sincerely regret having missed the opportunity to make your personal acquaintance. I am grateful, as much as one can be, for the attention with which you honor my feeble literary works. [...] All the signs point to the emergence of a cosmopolitan literature, for which no corner of the world where intelligence is to be found will be lost. An immense and peaceful influence will spread over the world". Perhaps he will come to Paris, to search the archives for "precious documents for the history of Sweden". He will publish the 4th volume of his Histoire de Suède: "This work was calculated to be a Précis de l'histoire de Suède. It has already exceeded its limits, no matter how much care I have taken to be concise"; there will probably be 6 volumes: "So I'm thinking of recasting the whole thing to the beginning, expanding a little more on our Middle Ages and attaching to it the volume on the earliest times, which has already appeared under the title of Svea Rikes Häfder"... He has read the Lettres sur l'Islande by Marmier, whose "studies on the North" he praises... Etc.
