Georges BERNANOS (1888-1948). 2 L.A.S., Thoisy par La Chapelle Vendômoise (Loir-et-Cher) [September 1946], to Edmond Limbourg in Brussels; 4 1/2 pages in-4, one envelope.
Correspondence concerning the preparation of a conference, his stay in Germany and peace.
He accepts the date of November 23 and has informed Albert Béguin. "I am a little confused by the undeserved honor you wish to bestow on me, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It will always be a good memory for me when I break the ice in one of the concentration camps on the White Sea Canal."
He has been very busy since his return from Switzerland, "because I have nine people with me, children and grandchildren, it's a big job to move all these people". He recalls his stay in Germany, where he was invited by General Koenig. "Perhaps you can get hold of the September 18 issue of La Bataille, in which I alluded to the universal nature of the German drama, which naturally earned me the insults of the French-language Russian press in Paris. Nothing is more urgent, for the future and peace of the world - if the world still has a future - than to gather and save the debris of old German Christianity. If we let her be damned, we'll be damned with her. I once spoke German, a long time ago, as a child, because my sister and I had a German governess. She even gave us a hint of a Bavarian accent! [...]. It seems to me that certain indispensable things could only be done by means of personal contacts, which would, moreover, be very necessary for myself, as I think more and more about this "Letter to the Germans" or "to the German Catholics" - preferably, perhaps, to the German Christians... I believe that my duty is to write it. And to write it, I lack not so much courage as time. Please pray for me"...
