[Franz LISZT (1811-1886)]. Caricature-lithograph by Alcide-Joseph LORENTZ (1813-1889), [1842]; 31 x 24 cm (framed). Caricature published in the newspaper Le Charivari, July 8, 1842, in the Miroir drolatique series. Liszt is shown on horseback, wearing the saber of honor that the Hungarians had given him in 1840, and playing a small piano placed on the horse's neck. Beneath the caricature, this amusing quatrain is printed: "Among all warriors, Litz is the only one without reproach, / For despite his great saber, we know that this hero / Has conquered only sixteenth notes / And killed only pianos". Attached is another caricature, The Abbé, a color lithograph by SPY, published in Vanity Fair on May 15, 1886. Liszt is shown full-length, in profile, wearing a black frock coat and long white hair.
