Pink sandstone sculpture of a flying Vidyādhara, Central India, probably Madhya Pradesh, 10th-11th century This sandstone sculpture depicts a celestial being in flight, probably a Vidyādhara, a supernatural figure from Indian mythology. Adorned with jewels and dressed in a fine drapery, the figure adopts a dynamic, graceful posture, characteristic of celestial beings found in medieval Indian art. The idealized facial features, elaborate hairstyle and sweeping body movements recall the style of Khajuraho temple sculptures (Chandela school). The Vidyādharas, associated with knowledge and magic, are often depicted in the overhead registers of shrines, accompanying deities and divine scenes. Despite some missing parts (arms, legs), the piece retains a high quality of execution and bears witness to the sculptural elegance of medieval India. 40 x 32 cm Missing parts.
