Grey schist Buddha head, Greco-Buddhist art, Gandhara, 2nd-4th century
The face is finely sculpted, with the wavy strands of the hair pulled back towards the ushnisha. The eyes are half-closed, the urna slightly raised, the lower lip fleshy, the ears thickly lobed. The gentle modelling of the sculpture gives an impression of serenity. The top of the ushnisha is pierced, and the back of the head has been reduced. Two holes were probably drilled during a previous pedestal.
