Thangka depicting a deity on horseback, Tibet, 18th-19th century
Pigments on canvas decorated with the equestrian deity Tsangpa Karpo, one of the protective figures of Tibetan religion. White in color, with the general appearance of a warrior, she wears a white conch on top of her skull, above her tiara. In her right hand, she holds a ritual object, probably a damaru drum (attributes vary according to the thangka's artistic schools and ritual intentions), and in her left, a cup filled with sacred jewels, Buddhist symbols found at the bottom of the thangka. The central figure is surrounded by various other deities: top left, Padmasambhava; center, a lama; right, the deity Hevajra and her consort in a fiery halo. Bottom left, Mahakala and another deity on horseback holding a spear, probably Gesar de Ling, another protector of Tibetan Buddhism. The whole is set against a backdrop of clouds, mountain and lake scenery dotted with pairs of animals, and on the left, a palace.
