Figure of Shakyamuni Buddha in his crowned form, made of copper alloy inlaid with silver and copper, in the Kashmir or Swat Valley style. Seated in vajrasana, his right hand in varada mudra, a gesture of supreme generosity, his left hand raised and holding the hem of his sanghati, highly pleated all around the body. Large floral earrings adorn his ears. His head is crowned, his lips inlaid with copper, his eyes and urna inlaid with silver. His neck is adorned with a pearl necklace. His sanghati is adorned on the shoulders and front of the torso with a tasselled cloak decorated with flowers in relief which, unusually for this type of Kashmir bronze, were originally inlaid with pieces of tinted glass, one of which has survived in turquoise. The Buddha is seated on a molded cushion supported by two lions resting on a double-lotus base, surrounded by kneeling figures of male and female donors. Remains of Sanskrit inscriptions appear on some of the lotus petals on the plinth and base. The adoring figure on the left has been reattached to the whole using small bronze rods, which have probably been repaired in the past. The nipple pierced at the back, which was used to secure the object, has been removed; traces of it can be seen. Height: 21.5 cm Piece rubbed and depatinated; late period production.
