Xū Gǔ - 虚谷 (c. 1824-1896), fan painting, China, 19th century Ink and watercolor on paper depicting a squirrel on an inkstone preparing to nibble medlars, next to a bowl filled with the fruit. An inscription at top left 鑑中老和尚 清玩壬辰六月 虚谷寫生 which could translate to: "Venerable master Jianzhong, for refined contemplation, in the sixth month of the renchen year (1892), Painted from life by Xu Gu".
