In the style of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), two silk paintings of horses, China, 19th century
Two parts of a horizontal scroll, ink and pigments on silk depicting horses being presented to dignitaries by grooms. One of the paintings bears the following inscription at top left: 大德元年夏首月 - Dàdé yuán nián xià shǒu yuè - "The first summer month of the first year of the Dade era" (i.e. 1297). Below, the signature 子昂 (Zǐ'áng), one of the artist names of the famous Chinese calligrapher and painter 赵子昂 (Zhào Zǐ'áng), also known by his personal name 赵孟頫 (Zhào Mèngfǔ 1254-1322), an eminent master of the Yuan dynasty. Beneath the signature is an artist's seal: 趙氏子昂 - Zhào shì Zǐ'áng, then two other collectors' seals: 楊氏珍藏 - "Precious Collection of the Yang Family" and 芳仲珍藏 - "Precious Collection of Fang Zhong". Another cut seal appears on the second painting. Both paintings, probably from a horizontal scroll, have been framed under glass.
