Six-leaf folding screen, Japan, early Edo period, Tosa school, 17th-18th century
Gold leaf, ink and pigments on paper depicting scenes from the Genji monogatari. The first two leaves illustrate chapter 14: "Miotsukushi, the pilgrimage to Sumiyoshi". This chapter recounts the reunion of Genji and Lady Akashi during a pilgrimage to the Sumiyoshi shrine. The latter, intimidated by Genji's large retinue and sparkling appearance, cuts short her visit without warning him of her presence, and he sends her a poem. The two middle leaves illustrate Chapter 1: "Kiritsubo, the Paulownia Pavilion". This is Prince Genji's coming-of-age ceremony. The last two leaves illustrate chapter 7: "Momiji no ga", a celebration under the autumn leaves. They show Genji and To no Chujo receiving high praise for their bugaku dance, "Waves of the Blue Sea". The screen has been reassembled, and the silk frame and paper on the back have been replaced. With storage box.
Sheet size: 45 cm; height: 105.5 cm
Numerous minor repairs to the folding screen.
