Abel Guérineau (1841-1925) The Pavilion of Calm Waters Three drawings, ink and watercolor on paper each depicting a chōzuya or temizuya, an ablution pavilion intended for the ceremonial purification rite, placed at the entrance to Shinto shrines. Two bear the inscription 水屋平 - mizuya-daira, the third 水屋 - mizuya. They are titled by the author "Japanese temple washbasin". - One is signed "A. Guérineau ex arch.te du Gouv.t japonais". 34.7 x 31.8 cm. - The other is initialed and dated "Tokio 25 X.bre 1878", with the artist's seal at lower left. 35 x 32.5 cm. - The last bears the artist's two seals at bottom right and left. 41.3 x 39.2 cm
