Abel Guérineau (1841-1925)
Princely residence
Ink and watercolor on paper depicting the traditional Japanese gate of an important estate, composed of a central body framed by two symmetrical lateral structures. The main roof is wide, double-pitched and covered with terracotta tiles, with carved details at the ends. The two side wings feature curved gables typical of the karahafu style. The frame is made of exposed wood, with traditional joints and finely crafted decorative elements. The walls incorporate lattice windows, and the whole structure rests on a raised base, probably made of stone, ensuring stability and enhancing the structure. At top right, the inscription 鍋嶋屋敷 - Nabeshima yashiki - "Domain of the Nabeshima clan". Below, two seals by the artist: one red and one black. On the passe-partout, the ink inscription "Entrance of a yashiki in Tokio (princely residence)". Sight size: 27 x 47.2 cm
