Juliette Derel, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, began her career as a ceramist in Vallauris, working at the Atelier du Grand Chêne, the Atelier du Tapis Vert and preparing summer exhibitions at Nérolium. In 1952, she opened her own studio, where she worked alongside her husband Jean Rivier (1915-2017), until they separated in 1957. Initially consisting of bowls and vases, often with abstract, geometric designs, Derel's production expanded over the years to include other utilitarian pieces, notably boldly colored mirrors, furniture and sculptures; her creations were often monochrome - the surfaces scratched or scarified.
