Frédéric-Jules Rudolphi (1804-1872 ?) began his apprenticeship in silversmithing in Copenhagen, before embarking on a European journey that led him to Paris, where he settled permanently around 1835. Pupil, collaborator and successor of his master Charles-Louis Wagner, he shone at international exhibitions, where he acquired a considerable reputation among a wealthy clientele, adept at his production blending medieval, Renaissance and oriental influences.

Our proposed vase is dedicated to Alexandre Adam (1790-1886). He was mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer between 1830 and 1848, and played a key role in the arrival of the Paris-Amiens-Boulogne-sur-Mer railroad line. Although the project was first conceived in 1835, the Capécure station, located in the district of the same name, was not built until 1855. Rudolphi's design seems to celebrate the attachment of this great Boulonnais figure to the development of his town, and his role as administrator of the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord.
