THE ADAMITE, or the insensitive Jesuit. Nouvelle doctrine. Cologne: Louis le Sincère, 1684. In-12, tan calf, double gilt fillet framing the boards, small gilt fleuron at the corners, ornate smooth spine, including a full-length black calf title-piece covering almost the entire spine, interior gilt roulette, gilt edges (19th-century binding).

New edition of this daring anonymous pamphlet, directed against a Jesuit by the name of Father Roche. The latter was teaching the nuns of Reims a theology that was, to say the least, peculiar, advising them to undress. He argued that the less ashamed they were to be naked, the closer they would be to the state of Adam before his fall, i.e. the state of innocence. The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece depicting Father Roche talking to 3 nuns behind a grille. Copy in 19th-century binding in the taste of Bauzonnet. Some minor wear.

Provenance: Count de Mexborough, with bookplate.
