In the aftermath of the war, Dominican priests Père Régamay and Père Couturier entrusted Fernand Léger with his first major mural project: the façade of the Plateau d'Assy church, built at the foot of Mont Blanc as part of a sanatorium. The project, conceived in 1937 by architect Maurice Novarina, was then taken up again and completed.

The Dominicans called on the major artists of their time for the interior decorations: Lipchitz, Chagall, Richier, Rouault, Bazaine, Lurçat, Matisse, Braque and Bonnard. Léger was responsible for the exterior, centered on the litanies of the Virgin. Inspired by the medieval tympanum, he placed Mary's face at the top, surrounded by symbols that echo the Marian invocations. The mosaic, executed by Gaudin from a model by the artist, covers 152 m² of the façade in glass paste smalts and white stone. The church was consecrated on August 4, 1950.
