Verdun, the iron gate, 1915
Ink on paper.
Signed, titled and located lower left.
Studio stamp on back.
19 x 14 cm

Exhibition :
Fernand Léger, 1881-1955, Staatliche Kunsthalle, Berlin, October 24, 1980 - January 7, 1981, reproduced on p. 109 of the catalog.

As soon as war was declared in August 1914, Fernand Léger was mobilized; he was sent to the Argonne front and took part in the Battle of Verdun. He remained there until 1917, when he was seriously gassed and had to undergo a long convalescence. Throughout his mobilization, he produced an abundant series of sketches, from which our drawing is taken; it bears witness to his life at the front, but also shows the deepening of his Cubist stylistic research throughout the war period.

A certificate from the Comité Léger can be provided on request and at the buyer's expense.

A certificate of inclusion in the Répertoire des œuvres sur papier de Fernand Léger, currently being prepared by Madame Irus Hansma, can be supplied on request and at the purchaser's expense.
