AURIOL (George). Steinlen and the street. Saint Lazare by Jacques Dyssord. - LECOMTE (Georges). Steinlen. Cats and Other Beasts. Unpublished drawings. Paris: Eugène Rey, 1930-1933 - 2 works in 2 folio volumes. Paperback, lined covers. First edition of these two important works devoted to Steinlen's oeuvre. The first is divided into 2 parts. The first exhibits a series of drawings discovered in the painter's studio, which he executed towards the end of his life. They illustrate George Auriol's text on Steinlen's life in Montmartre. The second gives us an insight into other drawings Steinlen made for the Saint Lazare prison, which closed in 1927. Jacques Dyssord tells the story. The edition is lavishly illustrated and includes 30 hors-texts, eight of which are in color. The second book is entirely devoted to Steinlen's animal work, and includes over 150 reproductions of the artist's drawings, 20 of which are out-of-text. All were unpublished at the time of publication, with the exception of Le Chat au cigare, which had appeared in Le Chat Noir (see Editor's note). Enclosed is a reproduction of a Steinlen drawing by Gillot, depicting a funeral procession. Some freckling. Both books were printed in an edition of 540 copies. They are among 500 on Arches wove paper (nos. 56 and 389). Copies very well preserved.
