FAURE (Sébastien) Encyclopédie anarchiste Paris: La Librairie internationale, Rédaction et administration, [1934]. -4 volumes in-4, dark brown half-chagrin, smooth spine, speckled edges (period binding). Rare first edition of this encyclopedia launched by anarchist activist Sébastien Faure (1858-1942), begun in 1925 and completed in 1934. Written by anarchist, syndicalist and revolutionary theorists, activists and writers, as well as "non-party specialists and technicians", it is the most extensive libertarian educational enterprise ever attempted. These 4 volumes form the first and only published part of what was to have been a 5-volume project; it offers the anarchist dictionary, giving the "philosophical and doctrinal aspect of Anarchism" and proposing "principles, theories, conceptions, tendencies and methods of truly revolutionary Thought and Action".
The other 4 parts should have dealt respectively with the "History of Anarchist Thought and Action, country by country", the "Lives and Works of the principal militants who belonged or belong to the Anarchist movement: philosophers, theorists, writers, orators, artists, agitators, men of action", the "Lives and Works of men who, without being strictly speaking anarchists, have nevertheless, in the field of Philosophy, Science, Letters, Arts and Action, contributed to human emancipation by their struggle against mortifying routine, against paralyzing traditions, against the sterilizing methods and forces of their time", and the "Catalogue of books, pamphlets, newspapers, journals and publications of all kinds, of anarchist or anarchizing propaganda".
Well-preserved copy in contemporary binding, spine faded. Some foxing to endpapers.
