JULLIAN (Camille), Histoire de Bordeaux depuis les origines jusqu'en 1895, Bordeaux: Feret et fils, May 1, 1895. - In-4, dark brown morocco, boards decorated with Duseuil-style gilding, ornate smooth spine, garnet-red morocco lining decorated with a rich gilded frame of fillets, roulettes and fleurons, brocaded silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilded edges on witnesses, bordered slipcase (Fleuret) First edition of this exhaustive history of the city of Bordeaux, dedicated to Alfred Daney, the mayor of the time, who had commissioned the work in view of the Bordeaux Universal Exhibition. Written in less than three years by Camille Jullian (1859-1933), an eminent historian, professor at the Faculté des Lettres de Bordeaux, member of the Institut and lecturer at the Collège de France, this work paints a comprehensive portrait of the city. Jullian explores the city's political and religious institutions, its emblematic monuments and its cultural life, all through four major periods: the Gallo-Roman period, the Gascon period, the French period under the royalty, and finally, the French period as a nation. The particularly rich illustration features 235 black reproductions of drawings, engravings, watercolors and photographs, both in the text and full-page. In addition, the book contains 32 plates, mostly made up of photographs produced using innovative processes for the time, such as phototypesetting and heliogravure. Plans of Bordeaux at different periods are also included. Several photographers contributed to its illustration, including Théodore Amtmann (1846-1933), Alphonse Terpereau (1839-1897) and medievalist Jean-Auguste Brutails (1852-1926), recognized as one of the pioneers in the use of photography in archaeology. A PRECIOUS COPY ON JAPON, PRESENTED TO PRESIDENT RAYMOND POINCARÉ IN 1913 BY THE THEN MAYOR OF BORDEAUX CHARLES GRUET (1844-1928). The volume opens with an additional printed leaf, featuring a printed inscription signed by Gruet (autograph signature): "À Monsieur Raymond Poincaré // Président de la République, // Hommage respectueux de la Municipalité bordelaise // Bordeaux, le 19 septembre 1913. // Le Maire, // Charles Gruet." A superb copy in a lined binding by Bordeaux bookbinder Marcel Fleuret, specially made for the President. Another copy on japon was offered to President Vincent Auriol on June 13, 1948 (Ruellan auction, September 14, 2024, no. 348). Spine slightly faded, a few scratches, otherwise a very well preserved copy. Provenance: Raymond Poincaré.
