COMBE (William) - ROWLANDSON (Thomas) The Grand Master or Adventures of Qui Hi ? in Hindostan. A Hudibrastie Poem in Eight Cantos by Quiz. London: Thomas Tegg, 1816. In-8, long-grained black morocco, gilt and blind roulettes framing the boards, richly decorated spine with false nerves, interior gilt roulette, gilt edges (period binding). First edition of this satirical poem in 8 cantos aimed at the government in India, led at the time by the Marquis of Hastings, here mocked through illustrations by English history painter and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). This copy lacks the cardboard containing pages 31-32, which is often missing, but is complete with the errata butterfly bound in at the end. Very well bound, from the library of Sir Charles Robert Bignold (1892-1970). Rubbing to headpieces, hinges, corners and edges, scuffing to title on spine. Frontispiece and title browned, some rare foxing. Provenance: Charles Robert Bignold, with bookplate.
