BURNES (Alexandre), Voyages de l'embouchure de l'Indus à Lahor, Caboul, Balkh et à Boukhara ; et retour par la Perse, pendant les années 1831, 1832 et 1833, Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1835. - 3 volumes in-8, gray half-percaline, smooth spine decorated with a gilt fleuron (binding circa 1880). First edition of the French translation by Jean-Baptiste Benoît Eyriès (1767-1846) of this account of the travels of British explorer Sir Alexander Burnes (1805-1841), providing valuable information on Afghanistan. A rare copy including in each volume an autograph letter from Alexander Burnes addressed to a certain A. Comb: "A Monsieur A. Comb // with the kindest regards // to a certain A. Comb. Comb // with the kindest regards // of his sincerest friend // The Author // Alex. Burnes" (vol. I); "To M. A. Comb // from the Author // Alex. Burnes" (vols. 2 and 3). The copy subsequently came into the possession of the poet, esoteric theorist and historian Stanislas de Guaïta (1861-1897), whose initials appear at the bottom of the spines. The latter donated it to the Princesse de Lanskoy, and added this dedication to the verso of the flyleaf of the first volume: "A la Princesse de Lanskoy // A ma jeune et intéressante élève en Kabbale, // Hommage de son ami // S. de Guaïta." Missing the atlas. The first volume is unbound, and the binding has been damaged and discolored by damp. Less extensive discoloration to the other two volumes. Several leaves in the first volume are stained, mainly at the end, and the last leaf is unbound. Rousseurs.
