ZENDRINI (Bernardino) Leggi e fenomeni, regolazioni ed usi delle acque correnti, Venice: Giovanni Battista Pasquali, 1741. - In-4, ivory parchment, smooth spine, untrimmed (period binding). First and only independent edition of this work by Italian physician, mathematician and hydraulician Bernardino Zendrini (1679-1747), which was frequently reprinted in collections devoted to hydraulics. This is Zendrini's main and most famous work, representing one of the first attempts to develop a treatise on hydraulics using mathematical formalism. The last section deals with the design of hydraulic structures such as artificial banks, drainage systems and discharge structures with underground vaults, as well as water-powered machines such as mills. The final chapter, co-authored with the astronomer and poet Eustachio Manfredi (1674-1739), discusses the expense involved in the project to divert two rivers whose flooding had caused catastrophic damage to the city of Ravenna. The edition is illustrated with 12 copper-engraved folding plates, 11 of which are mathematical figures and diagrams, and a map showing the diversion of the two rivers Ronco and Montone near Ravenna. A fine copy in contemporary binding, very fresh.
