Opera Vergiliana docte et familiariter exposita... Lyon: Jacques Sacon, 1517. - 2 volumes in one large folio, (10 ff.), CCV ff., (1 blank f.) ; (8 ff.), CCCXXIIII ff., (10 ff.). Havana calf, gilt roulette around the edges of the boards, in the center a wide frame of smoothed calf edged with roulettes and cold-edged angle irons, spine ribbed, red speckled edges (18th-century English binding). Baudrier, XII, pp. 344-345.
Fine illustrated edition of Virgil's works, printed on two columns in Lyon by Jacques Sacon, with glosses by Josse Bade, Servius, Donat and Beroaldo. The first volume, dated August 1517, includes the "Eglogues", the "Georgics" and the "Appendix vergiliana". The second volume, dated December 1517, contains the "Aeneid" in 12 books, followed by a thirteenth book written by the Italian humanist Maffeo Vegio (1406-1458). The first volume is illustrated with a title frame, a full-page engraving of Virgil's triumph and 64 in-text engravings. The second volume features the same title frame and 143 woodcuts in the text. These engravings come from the edition of Virgil published by Sébastien Brandt and printed in Strasbourg in 1502 by Johann Grüninger. Research has revealed that Brandt contributed to the creation of these engravings as a "designer". The binding is badly damaged, with numerous rubs and tears. The hinges are cracked, and the first board is largely detached. The headpieces are missing and the corners are dull. The second white endpaper is unbound. There is a tear in the upper margin of the first title leaf, caused by the removal of a handwritten bookplate, which affects the first line of text on the verso. Tape is visible at the bottom of the title and in the inner margin of the first two leaves. Light dampening is present, as well as a tear without missing leaf E2 in the second volume. Provenance: E. F. Bosamquet, with bookplate.
