TREVISAN (Bernardo) Della laguna di Venezia, Venice: Domenico Lovisa, 1715. - In-4, soft parchment, smooth spine, speckled edges (period binding). First edition dedicated to Giovanni Corner (1647-1722), Doge of Venice, of this treatise on the Venetian lagoon by Bernardo Trevisan (1652-1720). His study is divided into 4 parts, in which he examines what the lagoon was, what it is, what it is likely to become and what needs to be done to preserve it. In particular, he advocates "not hindering in any way but favoring and encouraging the flow of water, for by operating in this way the effort is much less and the lagoon can be maintained forever".
The illustration includes a fine allegorical frontispiece depicting the opposing Sea and Earth, with a perspective view of Venice in the background, engraved by Andrea Zucchi, and two folding plates showing the state of the Venetian lagoon up to the 7th century in one case, and a fine plan of the entire lagoon in the other. A good copy in contemporary binding, with some light spotting. First plate torn but not missing, second plate restored.
