SASTAGO, (Vicente Fernández de Córdoba y Alagón, comte de) Descripcion de los canales imperial de Aragon, i Real de Tauste dedicada a los augustos soberanos d. Carlos 4. i d. Maria Luisa de Borbon por el actual protector por s. magestad de ambos canales el conde de Sastago. Zaragoza: Francisco Magallon, 1796. - Small folio, shagreened basane, wide gilded border and green leather pastille surrounded by gilded fillets radiating from the center of the boards, smooth spine decorated (binding circa 1840). Very rare first edition of the description of the Canal of Aragon and the Royal Canal of Tauste, dedicated to King Charles IV of Spain and his wife Marie-Louise de Bourbon-Parme. This is volume 1, the only one published, comprising 3 chapters: Historia del Canal Imperial. - Descripcion de las Obras del Canal Imperial. - Utilidades de los Canales Imperial, y Real de Tauste. Above all, however, this edition is one of the finest published in Zaragoza at the end of the 18th century, thanks in particular to its illustrations, which include an engraved title, an out-of-text portrait of the Queen and King of Spain, a large fold-out map of the canals, 5 letterplates, 5 bandeaux, 2 culs-de-lampe, and 40 engraved plates after Felix Guitarte, Ambrosio Lanzaco and Tiburcio del Caso, featuring plans, sections and views of the canals. The 110 km-long Canal d'Aragon was completed on August 15, 1790, and is one of the most important hydraulic works in Europe. A fine copy in first-half 19th-century binding. The printed title is missing. Some wear rubbing, corners dulled. Scattered foxing. Pen scribble on first endpaper. Attached, in a similar binding: - MEMORIA HISTORICA DEL CANAL IMPERIAL DE ARAGON: noticia sobre las utilidades que produce, y esplicacion de lo que contienen los laminas que se publican. Madrid: Junio, D. J. Palacios, 1833. - Small folio. Rare first edition of this work, considered by some to be volume 2 of Sastago's book. It includes 38 out-of-text lithographs by Pharamond Blanchard (1805-1873). The copy is enhanced by the first plate of a delivery cover. Used rubbing to the hinges, corners and edges of the plates. Freckling and stains on most plates, as in the copies of which reproductions have been found.
