PARADIN (Guillaume).
Mémoires de l'histoire de Lyon.
Lyon : Antoine Gryphe, 1573. - In-folio, brown half-chagrin, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (20th century binding).
"Baudrier, VIII, pp. 362-363.
First edition dedicated to François de Mandelot (1529-1588), governor of Lyon, of the first serious and authoritative history of the city of Lyon, written by Guillaume Paradin (1510-1590), historian, canon and dean of the Beaujeu chapter.
Note this passage in chapter XXIX about the poet Louise Labé (1524?-1566), whom the author had known: "Her face was more angelic than human: but this was nothing compared to her mind, so chaste, so virtuous, so poetic, so rare in knowledge, that it seemed to have been created by God to be admired as a great prodigy among humans. For although she was instituted in the Latin language, above & beyond the capacity of her sex, she was admirably excellent in the Poetry of the vulgar languages, to which her works, which she has left to posterity, bear witness..." (pp. 355-356).
Superb impression by Antoine Gryphe, with a beautiful architectural and allegorical frame on the title, which the printer used in other publications.
 Some old annotations.
Bound at the end:
- RUBIS (Claude de). Les Privilèges, franchises et immunitez octroyees par les roys tres chrestiens, aux consuls, eschevins, manans & habitans de la ville de Lyon, & à leur posterité. Avec une ample declaration des choses plus notables, contenues en iceux... Lyon : Antoine Gryphe, 1574. - In-folio.
Baudrier, VIII, p. 364.
First edition, also dedicated to François de Mandelot, of this work by the historian and public prosecutor in Lyon Claude de Rubis (1533-1613), intended as a companion piece to Paradin's book.
Second printing, dated 1574. The rare first copy bears the year 1573.
Soiling to the title of the first book. Last two leaves of second work soiled and stained. The entire lower margin of the last leaf is missing, and has been redone. "
