NAUDÉ (Gabriel) Apologie pour tous les grands personnages qui ont été faussement soupçonnez de magie, The Hague: Adrian Vlac, 1653. - In-8, soft parchment, smooth spine (contemporary binding). New edition of this important work against ignorance and obscurantism, written by Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653), librarian of Cardinal Mazarin's first library in Paris.
In it, he rehabilitates famous names such as Pythagoras, Numa Pompilius, Socrates, Aristotle, Plotinus, Porphyry, Scaliger, Anaud de Villeneuve, Corneille Agrippa, Savonarole, Nostradamus, Roger Bacon, Virgil, etc. The work first appeared in 1625, and this is the last edition published during the author's lifetime.
Copy of the 18th-century bibliophile Gérard Meerman (1722-1771), with this handwritten note (autograph?): "Acheté à Orleans // ce 21 Juin 1747. // G. Meerman." The copy, like the library, was subsequently owned by Gérard's son Joannes Meerman (1752-1815), and the whole set was sold at auction in 1824.
A good copy in contemporary binding, very well preserved despite some foxing and discreet wormholes. Provenance: Gérard and Joannes Meeman (1824, no. 1285).
