LÉON L'HÉBREU: Dialoghi di amore, composti per Leoni medico, di natione hebreo, et dipoi fatto christiano (Venice: in casa de' Figliouli di Aldo [Paul Manuce], 1545). - In-8, supple parchment overlay, spine ribbed (contemporary binding). Renouard, p. 134. Third edition of this text, but the second given by Paul Manuce after that of 1541. As in the latter, it includes the preface by editor Mariano Lenzi to Madonna Aurelia Petrucci, the work of Castilian rabbi, philosopher and physician Leon the Hebrew (1460?-1520?). First published in Rome in 1535, it comprises three dialogues between Philo and Sophia, in which the author develops the idea that love is "the foundation of the universe and the key to union with God". According to Tristan Dagron and Saverio Ansaldi, this text "constitutes a decisive moment in the intellectual history of Judaism, but also of modern thought, which, beyond its immediate literary success, will find indisputable echoes in Bruno or Spinoza" (Tristan Dagron and Saverio Ansaldi, "Dialogues d'amour / Léon l'Hébreu", Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaires en Sciences humaines et Sociales de Montpellier, 2006, see site HAL SHS). Copy in contemporary binding, with several old annotations in the margins. Parchment soiled, spine missing, no ties. Some soiling to title, otherwise very well preserved inside. The foliation changes from 135 to 155 without missing. Provenance: old signatures on the title.
