- In-4, brown basane, ornate ribbed spine, speckled edges (period binding). Second edition after that of 1679, of this interesting collection of portraits of the kings of France, engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin.
This copy, in contemporary binding, includes the title followed by 63 portraits numbered from 1 to 63, plus 5 unnumbered portraits: Louis XIV, Monsieur Louis dauphin de France, Monsieur Louis de France duc de Bourgogne, Monsieur Philippe de France duc d'Anjou and Monseigneur Charles de France duc de Berry. In this edition, the portraits of Louis XIV and the dauphin have been redone for the occasion, representing these figures nine years older than the engravings in the 1679 edition. The portraits of the Dukes of Burgundy, Anjou and Berry are also new, as the latter were born after 1679. This copy belonged to the Marquise d'Agoult, with her name inscribed in ink on the first white endpaper. She may have been Angélique d'Agoult (1767-1818), whose story is resolutely romantic. First married to François-Édouard, marquis d'Agoult (1746-1837), she later married the revolutionary Joseph Rovère (1748-1798), nicknamed the "Marat of the South". He was condemned to be deported to Cayenne, where he died in 1798, while Angélique was on her way to join him. Neglected by the de Rovère family and ignored by her first husband, she died in poverty on February 28, 1818. Binding restored. Headcap rebound, lower headcap missing, corners dulled. Provenance: Marquise d'Agoult, with her name in ink on the first endpaper.
