Paris: Prault, 1771. - In-4, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding).
"First edition, dedicated to the Dauphin, of the account of Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen de Trémarec's (1734-1797) first voyage as commander in the North Atlantic, carried out between 1767 and 1768. The main aim of this voyage was to protect French cod fishermen in Iceland and provide them with the necessary assistance.
This work is of great importance as it offers the first detailed description of this region. The illustrations include a title vignette, two headbands (the first bearing the dedicatee's coat of arms), 14 maps, plans and views, and 4 plates engraved by Le Mire after drawings by Charles Eisen.
An interesting copy given by Kerguelen de Trémarec to an unknown recipient, with this contemporary note on the flyleaf opposite the title: "Donné par M. de Kerguelen.
Headpieces and endpapers missing, corners dulled, some wear rubbing, first endpaper partly unbound. Old pencil notes on verso of first endpaper, stain on edge of first 6 leaves."
