JUSTINIEN - ACCURSE (François) Institutiones. Institutionum seu Elementorum iuris ciuilis libri IIII. cum Accursiana interpretatione, aliorumque doctissimorum iurisconsultorum annotationibus, ad multorum exemplarium tum impressorum tum scriptorum fidem diligenter recogniti [Lyon] : François Fradin pour Aymon de La Porte, [1530]. - In-folio, 388 x 272 : (8 ff.), CXX ff. Stiff parchment, spine ribbed, speckled edges (19th-century binding). Very rare Lyon edition of Justinian's "Institutes", a law textbook for students, drawn up by order of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century to facilitate the teaching and study of law. Drafted by a commission comprising Tribonian, Theophilus and Dorotheus, it is divided into four books dealing respectively with persons, things, heredity, and obligations arising from tort and actions. These "Institutes" are part of the "Corpus juris civilis" or "Corpus of Civil Law", which also includes three other collections: the "Code of Justinian", the "Digest" and the "Novelles".
This edition presents the text accompanied by glosses by François Accurse (1182?-1260), a jurist and professor at the University of Florence, who specialized in Justinian. Printed by François Fradin in Lyon, this edition uses red and black Gothic type and features a magnificent Renaissance frame on the title, surrounding it and the printer's mark. A mid-page woodcut depicts the Emperor Justinian enthroned in the center, surrounded by his dignitaries, while a three-quarter-page engraving illustrates the civil tree. The copy bears on the title the handwritten ex-libris of Pierre de Marnas: "Pertinet ad Petrum de Marnas Liber isté." This may refer to Pierre de Marnas, doctor and lawyer at the presidial seat of Villeneuve-de-Berg, diocese of Viviers, at the end of the 16th century. In the place of the coat of arms at the bottom of the title frame, arms have been drawn, apparently representing a tree and mill wings, accompanied by the Latin word "Demantolives? A copy in a later imitation binding, probably from the 19th century. Stains and restorations to the title, repaired tear to leaves VIII and LIII, tear without missing leaf LVI, restoration to the inner margin of leaf XXXIX. A few wormholes, not serious, on the last two leaves. Mottling. Non-missing tear repaired on fol.
