Dijon: Antoine de Fay, 1733. - In-4, brown calf, gilded arms in the center of the boards, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding).
"First edition, dedicated to Cardinal de Fleury, of the chronicle of the abbey of Tournus, written by Canon Pierre Juénin (1668-1747). Some claim that an earlier edition existed, but without providing a source or citing it, which seems to be an error.
The work consists of two volumes, generally bound in a single volume, the second of which has no title page. The first volume deals with the history of the abbey, which the author has divided into four parts: "La première comprend [...] tout ce qui a quelque raport à l'Histoire de Tournus, jusqu'à l'an 875, que les Moins de S. Filibert s'y établent. The second contains the History of Tournus under the Abbots Regular of the Congregation of S. Filibert. The third, what happened under the Commendatory Abbots. The fourth, the History of the secularization of the Abbey, & all that concerns the History of Tournus, from that time to [the time of the book's publication]. [...] After the History "follows" a Description de l'Eglise de Abbaïe, such as it was in 1562, when the Huguenots ravaged it. We then "find" a Chronological Table, with a succession of the Archbishops of Lyon, the Bishops of Chalon, those of Mâcon, & the Princes who have been Sovereigns of Tournus since Constantine the Great: & immediately after this Chronology, some Critical Remarks on part of the fourth Volume of the Nouvelle Gaule Chrétienne" (Preface).
The second volume contains the "Proofs of the History of Tournus".
This edition also includes seven plates: a "Plan de la ville et abbaye de Tournus", a "Profil de la ville de Tournus" (p. 1), an "Éventail illustré" (two folding plates, p. 46), an "Effigie d'un religieux et d'un seigneur" (p. 255), a "Plan de l'église souterraine" and a "Plan géométral de l'église de Saint Filibert de Tournus" (two plans, one folding, p. 382). On page 61, there is also a reproduction of two copper-engraved coins in the text.
EXEMPLAIRE WITH THE ARMS OF PRESIDENT JEAN BOUHIER (1673-1746), archaeologist, translator and poet from Dijon, who was First President of the Parliament of Burgundy and member of the Académie française, elected in 1727. His library included 35,000 works and 2,000 manuscripts.
A very well preserved copy, despite a repaired tear to the first of the 2 plates before page 47, and a tear without missing pages I1 and I2 in the second volume."
