GESSNER (Salomon) - DIDEROT (Denis), Œuvres, Zurich: chez l'auteur, 1777. - 2 volumes in-4, granite-colored basane, decorated spine, red edges (period binding). Cohen, 432. Reprint of the 1773 edition of the first volume and first printing of the second. The two tales entitled "Les Deux Amis de Bourbonne" and "Entretien d'un Père avec ses Enfants", which open the first volume, are by Denis Diderot. They are followed by "Idylles" by the Swiss writer Salomon Gessner, translated into French by Jakob Heinrich Meister, and "Lettre de M. Gessner à M. Fuslin, auteur de l'Histoire des peintres suisses". Also included is the prestigious list of subscribers, which includes, alongside numerous German princes, the names of the Princesse de Soubise, the Duchesse de la Vallière, the Amsterdam bookseller Rey and even Voltaire. The second volume includes the "Idylles", various poems and "Le Premier navigateur, en deux chants", an edition distinguished by the fact that it is entirely illustrated by Salomon Gessner himself, who produced both the drawings and the etchings. The illustrations include two engraved titles, six entablatures, thirty-three culs-de-lampe and twenty plates. The engravings in the second volume are from the first edition. A fine copy in contemporary binding, from the library of Jules Bobin, bibliophile and friend of Joris-Karl Huysmans. Bindings very skilfully restored. Provenance: Jules Bobin, with his name in ink on the endpapers.
