Published in 10 issues from January or February 1799 to early 1803, it reviews "the first paleoichthyological discoveries in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the Maastrichtian stratotype region. After the capture of Maastricht in November 1794 by the French revolutionary army at war with Stathouder Wilhelm V, collections of "petrified" fossils from the underground quarries of Sint Pietersberg were acquired by the People's Representative Augustin-Lucie de Frécine and the Commissioners in charge of searching for scientific and artistic objects in the conquered countries, André Thoüin and Barthélémy Faujas de Saint-Fond. These fossils, sent to Paris in 1795, were then described and figured between 1799 and 1803 by the latter in his Histoire naturelle de la Montagne de Saint-Pierre de Maestricht" (Arnaud Brignon, "Faujas de Saint-Fond, Reinwardt, Cuvier et les poissons fossiles du Crétacé de la "Montagne Saint-Pierre" de Maastricht (Pays-Bas), 2015).
Faujas de Saint-Fond was aided in his undertaking by Bernard-Germain de Lacépède (1756-1825), who at the time held the chair of zoology devoted to reptiles and fish at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle.
