[CORSICA (kingdom of)].

"From February to August 1794, the English squadron commanded by Horatio Nelson, at the request of Corsican general Pasquale Paoli, took Saint-Florent, Bastia and Calvi in turn. The constitution of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom was established in Corte, with the King of England as sovereign and Gilbert Elliot as viceroy. On August 10, the day after the capture of Calvi, the French troops capitulated and Corsica came under the complete control of the Paolists and the English. In October, Paoli was removed from power and returned to London in 1795. In October 1796, Bonaparte's victories worried the English, who ordered Elliot to leave Corsica, and on October 27 Bonaparte announced to the Directoire that Corsica was once again part of the Republic. It was the shortest independence in history.
